A warm legacy from dad
Hailing from Finland, Erika Fogelberg is a teacher who lives with her husband in the Swedish mountain village of Hemavan. Today, with their adult kids studying elsewhere, she now has more time to pursue her passion for the outdoors – and make use of the bib trousers given to her by her father.
‘I have a deep interest in the outdoors and love everything from hiking and kayaking to skiing and ski touring’ says Erika. ‘Now that our three children have moved out to study in Umeå, my husband and I can plan for a life where we do exactly what we like more often.’
Now days for instance, Erika is training to be a wilderness guide. It satisfies the growing interest she’s had the last few years for multi-day trekking, especially in the winter.
Though exercising it more now, Erika’s passion for the outdoors was fostered early by her father. He was a salesperson in a sports shop, and acquired a large number ofFjällräven garments over the years. A frugal fellow, many of these clothes are still being put to good use during mountain trips and at the family cabin.
‘One day, he dug out a pair of down-insulated bib trousers from his stash,’ recalls Erika. ‘He bought them in the mid-eighties when he was on his way to the Alps for a ski trip. Cold weather was promised, so he went on the trip well prepared. It turned out however, that the bib trousers were far too warm for alpine skiing. Imagine my joy when I got them after all those years!’

Luckily for Erika, the bib trousers have been the perfect accompaniment on many mountain tours, including everything from sleeping in tents and bivouacs, to dog sledding. Thick and high waisted, they protect a great deal of the body and dry quickly so she can stay warm throughout a day’s adventures. She also appreciates that they have full-length zippers at the sides and that the suspenders are nicely elastic.
As she says, ‘They are the perfect reinforcement garment, and with them I don’t need to wear much additional clothing to protect myself from the cold. When I’m melting snow or preparing dinner for example, all I need to wear with my bib trousers is a wool sweater or thin down jacket.’
As such, like her father, there is a high probability Erika will pass down her bib trousers to the next generation. Lucky kids!
