The trek begins in the iconic Langdale Valley. A gentle start will take you along the valley bottom where, if you look up, you will see a Neolithic 'axe factory' high above on the mountain side. Then begins the ascent up Stake Pass (481m) via a winding packhorse route from the top you'll wind down hairpin bends into Langstrath Valley. At Black Moss Pot there will be a friendly weclome at the first checkpoint of your journey and you'll be delighted by waterfalls and deep pools of crystal-clear water.

The track then follows Stonethwaite Beck which will lead you along the valley floor surrounded by the craggy mountain sides of the central fells. Crossing back over the river via a footbridge you’ll pass Galeny Force and then traverse below a woodland until you get to the tiny village of Rossthwaite. Over the bridge you is the first camp spot deep in the Borrowdale valley

In the morning you'll cross the River Derwent via an old pack horse bridge and pass through ancient woodlands. The trail heads up past old farmsteads to the beautiful Sty Head Tarn (479m) where you'll find a checkpoint. Enjoy being immersed in the high fells of the Lake District and then descend into Wasdale, a valley famous for its rock climbing and sheep farming heritage. Head into another unique camp spot, this time situated on the remote shores of Wastwater.

Your last day on the trail begins with a gentle climb up to Burnmoor Tarn (297m). From here there is an option to visit a stone circle or head straight to the tiny village of Boot and Eskdale Mill. From here we follow the River Esk to the bottom of a ravine and the last checkpoint before the finish.

From here the Esk Trail takes you through the woodlands of Eskdale. Keep an ear out for the local steam train as you make your way towards the coast and your final destination.
