Karina, currently a PhD student in public policy, has always been the friend who coaxes others to go on outdoor adventures. She reached the summit of Kilimanjaro, trekked with the gorillas and swam with the Great White Sharks. In 2020 however, tragedy struck when she lost both her mother and brother to COVID-19 at the same time. Understandably devastated, it has taken Karina’s spirit some time to ready itself for the next big adventure: Fjällräven Polar. Though she has trepidations about the cold and icy conditions, with her teammates on the ground and her family watching over her, she feels she won’t be alone. When not exploring nature, Karina spends quality time with her rescue dogs Tess and Coffee in a multi-species family. Together, they enjoy her balcony in Mexico City, which she designed with native plants and flowers to attract pollinators and help preserve hummingbirds. She also cares for the community park nearby. Though her mother could not travel, she inspired Karina to marvel at nature and see the world. So she has, and so she will.
