FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What if I’ve never been backpacking before?
No worries! The Fjällräven Classic USA is designed for beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. You’ll receive detailed instructions, route maps, and safety information. Plus, our staff and medical teams are available along the trail.
2. How challenging is the trek?
The trek involves hiking at high altitudes (up to 12,000 feet), so it’s essential to stay hydrated and take your time. The trail is well-marked and doesn’t include technical climbs, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
3. What should I pack?
Refer to the Packing List, Health & Safety page for a comprehensive checklist. Essentials include a 35–65L backpack, tent, sleeping bag, first aid kit, and trekking poles. Recommended Fjällräven gear links are also available in the packlist section.
4. What kind of food will be provided?
We provide gluten-free and vegetarian meal options. Backpacker Pantry Meals are available for pickup before the trek and can be prepared at campsites. Snacks such as pretzels, fresh fruit, and peanut butter are available at checkpoints.
5. How do I stay safe from wildlife?
The trail passes through bear and moose territory. Use the provided bear canisters at campsites for all food and scented items. Avoid close encounters with wild animals. If you spot wild animals before they see you, stand still and make sure they hear you. Wait until you can pass on without disturbing them.
6. What happens if I can’t continue the hike?
You can exit the trek at any checkpoint or campsite where staff will arrange transport back to Trekker’s Inn. A medical sweep also follows the last group of trekkers to assist anyone needing help.
7. Is there medical support on the trail?
Yes. Medical staff are stationed at each campsite, along the trail, and at the finish line. They have first aid supplies and can arrange emergency evacuation if necessary.
8. How do I handle waste on the trail?
We follow Leave No Trace principles. Wag bags for human waste are provided at registration and must be used on the trail. Disposal is available at Trekker’s Inn after the trek.
9. Will I have cell service during the trek?
Cell coverage is limited or unavailable along the trail. Always keep your map and compass handy for navigation. The route is clearly marked with Fjällräven trail markers.
10. How can I prepare for the altitude?
Stay hydrated (minimum of one gallon per day) and take your time on the trail. Symptoms like headaches or nausea may indicate altitude sickness—rest, hydrate, and inform the staff if needed.
11. What if I have special dietary needs?
We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions. Please let us know during registration, and we’ll provide suitable options for meals and snacks.
12. What is the best way to get to Trekker’s Inn?
Taking the RTD (Colorado’s public transit) from Denver International Airport to Downtown Boulder Station is recommended. The Fjällräven Boulder Store is located just 0.5 miles from Downtown Boulder Station. The Fjällräven shuttle will pick participants up from the Boulder Store and take them to Trekker's Inn. If driving, parking at Trekker’s Inn opens at 4 PM the day before the trek.
